After graduating from Dartmouth College with a degree in biology, Joseph M. Mascia turned from lab and research to diverse work experiences, including farm laborer and mason's tender, gaining broad experience in construction. He then started and for many years ran a design and construction business.
He began writing seriously in 1988 and '89, drawing from his experiences working in the orchards of New England and New York for his first book Sawdust Footprints. While he completed a number of early drafts in those years, he wasn't content with the work until many years later, and published it in 2005.
During parts of 1990-92, he travelled extensively in Central America in an attempt to understand the region, its cultures and conflicts. These experiences led to the ideas for his second book Justin the Traveller. Again he wrote several early drafts, then set it aside, only completing it years later after several return trips to Central America.
His third novel, A Well Executed Piece of Work, draws heavily from his decades of experience in design and construction.
